We here at Bad Kids Press go to a lot of comic book conventions and events and the one drag we can see about all these events is there are way too many children and sober people in attendance, right?
Now we have a solution!
Join us Thursday October 8th at Orleans Bar and Restaurant in fabulous Davis Square for Comics and Cocktails, a night of comic book themed entertainment with the artists and writers of Bad Kids Press and co-hosted by the greatest comic book shop in the land Comicazi.
Orleans is as fine of watering hole as you're likely to find in Somerville and they were gracious enough to host our funny book celebration for grownups but what exactly is Comics and Cocktails?
Glad you asked:
Comics and Cocktails is the night for all of us who grew up on comic books, and now have completely unrelated drinking problems, to meet up and commiserate and even revel in our stubborn refusal to give up on the storytelling medium we all love: comic books.
They'll be themed drinks based on all the swell Bad Kids Press titles there to help you get in the mood. Which means you can now have the distinct honor of requesting whatever a "GWF Sonic Smackdown Punch" or a "Rapid City Icicle" is from the friendly barkeeps at Orleans. Actually, here's a breakdown of all the Bad Kids themed drinks and what precise poison you'll be imbibing when selecting them.
But it's not just about Bad Kids or the booze, (but isn't though...) no, Comics and Cocktails is about the kickass comic book community here in Somerville.
We want everyone to mingle, tell us what you're reading, tell us what you're working on too while you're at it. Because we plan on doing the same. They'll be a drink and draw art station with paper, pens and pencil (feel free to bring your own too) where you can have a beer and brush up on or just show off your art skills. I'll (Tony McMillen, guy with the good hair) be there drawing up original sketches and doing commissions if asked, stop by and say howdy. But mostly I'm there because just want to draw with some other likeminded folks and see what you're putting down on paper. I'm sure Matt Bessette of Daemone fame will be making an appearance at the drink and draw station too, the guy is a commission machine.
There's going to be games and prizes too. We'll be having a raffle (giant spinning wheel, folks) where you can win some awesome comic book booty. And not just primo Bad Kids swag either, Comics and Cocktails is sponsored by the good guys at Comicazi (best comic book store on Earth 2A ) and boy do they have some deep pockets when it comes to giving away classic silver and bronze age comics.
Our resident villainy enabler writer Josh Dahl had some interesting points to make in regards to cosplaying at Comics and Cocktails for those inclined to not limit their creatively to Halloween:
"Is there a cosplay contest?"
"HELL NO! But if you show up in costume we will do our damn best to make sure someone buys you drinks!"
So if you're into it, we're into it. Come as you are or as you wish you would be.
The night is going to be a jumping castle of joy that only deflates when we all stop bouncing. Or when they kick us out. That's because the driving theme of this event is that we've all known for quite some time that comics are not just for kids and that cons are great to include something for everyone but why not also have an event that's just for the big kids?
Come down to Orleans after 6pm on Thursday October 8th, have a few funny named libations with us and then we can tell each other what we it is exactly we love about comic books.
